The Ancient Egyptian creation story, shows Nut and Geb as fiery lovers, once, they embraced so tightly that nothing could come between them. Shu became jealous and to separate them became the air that moves between the sky and the earth. Separation of sky( Nut) and earth ( Geb).
But, the separation came too late, and Nut was pregnant. She gave birth to all of the stars and planets. Shu put a curse on her, so she couldn’t have more children. Nut went to the god Thoth for help, and she had five more children on the epagomenal days of the Egyptian calendar.
Nut is often depicted inside of coffin lids as a symbol of the sky over the deceased soul in the afterlife. Some coffins depict her with protective wings, while others symbolize her as a ladder. Her role in the afterlife has to do with the view of her as the ultimate mother.
The journey of death would bring the dead back to the arms of the mother Nut, same as night would bring Ra back to her. Below left image, Nut wearing the solar disc and flanked by two Wadjet eyes. (Ptolemaic period, ca 304-30 iH at the Glencairn Museum, Pennsylvania). Anc. Myth.
