hbcu representation vs unity: a thread/rant
all hbcus deserve to be represented. every single one. we all know this. the people at the ones who ARE being represented KNOW THIS.
the issue that really bothers me about this is the other hbcus are acting like we’re in the media’s face BEGGING to be in this film or that, saying PICK ME PICK ME PUT US IN IT YESSIR US OR NOTHING like we didn’t ASK for this.
like we can’t even appreciate our alum’s successes or our own representation without making it feel like we don’t deserve it, and no this isn’t me victimizing cause we chose to go here, but it’s so very possible to push your name and build your legacy just like h*ward did.
and everybody has already said “you can uplift your hbcu without devaluing or suppressing another” and i stand by that. especially when i swear a majority of us have been supportive and agreeing but it’s always overshadowed with whatever entitlement yall think we have.
now me saying nobody is entitled here is cap. i know there are a few, but until you experience what happens here, you have absolutely no clue of the actual reality. and that’s another can of worms.
it’s sad cause it really feels like all h*ward students have is eachother. like the institution as a whole lacks consideration. financially, through professors, housing, through communication. all that.
then you go broader and the people who share a historical common ground with us that we try to support due to that doesn’t like us either.
so in a way i can see why the entitlement is justified, cause despite all this adversity inside and outside the institution, h*ward has managed to breed the most genuiene and talented people ive ever met in my life. we run our school like a community.
like these notions of us are getting old. stop using that “largest endowment” thing over our heads yo we DONT SEE IT and we DONT HAVE A SAY OR PARTS IN IT. but again we try to say that and yall use it as fuel as to why we suck. but unity right?
you can be “tired of seeing us” you are entitled to whatever you feel. but to us it’s refreshing, despite all the bs, there are still successes. but again, it’s like everyone lacks empathy cause it’s not them like it could NEVER BE. IT CAN.
GO DO IT. NOBODYS STOPPING YOU. the same energy it takes to constantly bring up how it’s always us is the same energy you could be using to go do it. get your hbcu heard like our alum did. go.
h*ward students ride hard for eachother for a reason, and it’s stuff like this. once you get these tired notions of what you believe we act like out your head and see us as highly intelligent black people who are fighting the same fight as yall, maybe we’d get somewhere.
until then, less talk and more do. as simple as this big sean line is, “i don’t talk sh*t i just do it” is something to live by.
