A THREAD: A writer on twitter asked if he used a certain phrase to describe a woman, would it be understood? (He wrote the phrase.) I said “I understand it, but I would stop reading if i saw it used.” (bc it was kind of an offensive way to describe a woman’s looks.) 1/4
About 20 others agreed w/me, but there was no mob mentality. Everyone was respectful to the author, only agreed the expression sounded a bit misogynistic, so think twice unless that’s what you’re going for.
The only reason I’m writing this thread is because I was blocked. 2/4
I sincerely thought I was helping him. Even if the author wouldn’t say it in his own life, you still want to keep your characters from turning readers off. It makes me sad that a writer wouldn’t be open to considering how his words affect a group of people. 3/4
It’s imperative to be open to being sensitive to your readers, especially if they’re part of the group you may be offending. #WritingCommunity Would you want to know if you may be offending your readers? 4/4
