Why’s it taken so long? Truthfully, we don’t and likely won’t know, but a few thoughts: 1/ https://twitter.com/dwpageofficial/status/1254545811465220096
When it comes to rights, everyone involved has a stake - primary stakeholders would be Gold (composer rights), the BBC (recording rights) and Silva Screen (distributor). Alastair King as the (orchestrator/conductor) likely has some legal ownership as well. 2/
Everyone has to agree on royalties to be received and like any business, has to be negotiated and all parties agreed upon before it can progress.

At this point, everything becomes conjecture ie a bit useless and to be taken with a grain of salt. But that’s what we do best! 3/
If Murray is only now talking about releasing the Series 10 OST, it sounds like he’s the primary mover in getting it released. Which means, by the same token, he might be part of the reason why it hasn’t been released sooner. 4/
Why not? Has he been too busy? Was he not getting a fair deal? Is he an ass? All of these are possible and the third one might be easy to plump for but there are other considerations. 5/
Given the number of stakeholders involved, the numbers a composer can get from album sales is really small. Plus, as it’s unlikely to get radio plays and that streaming sites like Spotify pay a pittance. Pocket money essentially. 6/
It’s a problem endemic with the whole music industry, which is incredibly insecure for almost all musicians. Labels/studios can be gannets and some have moved to deny even the most basic of royalties to composers recently. The lockdown is now amplifying this inequality. 7/
“But it’s been 3 years, why now?”

Lockdown. If Gold thought he was getting a bad deal, it’s possible he’s now stepped down or the others (BBC, Silva Screen) have come back with something more favourable.

And there has been a huge spike in DW content at Chibnalls behest. 8/
“Why not sooner?”

If it’s because of Gold thinking he’s not getting a good deal, then he’s been prioritising new composing work as it’s far more reliable. And he has been very busy since 2017. Lockdown is now causing that work to dry up, so something has shifted.
