As concern about immigration falls to 20 year low @IpsosMORI research (pre-lockdown https://www.ipsos.com/ipsos-mori/en-uk/ipsos-mori-political-pulse-march-2020) shows increase in people self-reporting they are becoming more positive about immigration since EUref (up 8 points since 2018) – for reasons why see next tweet 1/4
Opinion divided on why - but perceptions that immigration will reduce due to Brexit are becoming more important; 39% say are more positive because reassured numbers will reduce (up 12 points from 2018), 37% say because immigrants’ contribution to UK has been highlighted (nc) 2/4
And huge divide on reasons among those who voted Leave or Remain 3/4
What we don’t know yet is impact of CV-19 on immigration concerns. While many will still want numbers reduced public opinion may be less supportive on restrictions in key sectors (e.g. health, agriculture). For all our research on CV-19 see https://www.ipsos.com/ipsos-mori/en-uk/public-opinion-covid-19-coronavirus-pandemic END.
