1. #Nigeria is a multi-ethnic society. Ethnicity is the most dominant demographical super group that exists in this nation.

2. Given the above, it is natural for ethnic sentiment to play a major part in the election of leaders.

3. Given 1 & 2 above...1/x
It follows that our ethnic differences ought to be the signal we pay the most attention to in drafting a more inclusive and democratic electoral system. The current structure of zonal allocation is inefficient. It is lazy and, I would argue, undemocratic. 2/x
I say undemocratic because, while on the surface it appears to cater to each zonal faction of the country on a rotational basis, with the argument being that power would eventually touch all zones representative of all (major) ethnicity, it fails to account 3/x
for the very thing it was set up to do. It excludes. It divides the people along ethnic lines, rather than unite them. The results are clear. We see our leaders as leaders of certain ethnic groups rather than as a universal government. 4/x
The result being that the groups which have no representation declare themselves outsiders. For justiable reasons. Elected leaders too declare loyalty to the groups through whom they've ascended unto power. Again, for justifiable reasons. 5/x
What all these culminates to is what we see unfold before our eyes today. Bigotry and preferential treatment along ethnic lines. The problems are severe and call for radical reformation. 6/x
I here propose a system that should operate based on the following: electoral victory guaranteed only when the distribution of votes can be demonstrated to be evenly spread (or very close) across all the states of the federation 7/x
The advantages of this system are obvious:
1. The results will be a close reflection of the people's mandate. It will capture more robustly, the complexities that are naturally associated with a multi-ethnic society like #Nigeria 8/x
2. It will eliminate the subjugation of minority ethnic groups by giving every state a level ground to participate in the electoral process.

3. Candidates that emerge victorious from such a tough, nonbiased process are likely to be genuine leaders. 9/x
This thread is my proposal for a more efficient electoral process. Of course there's a chance I may have missed a thing or two. I would like your thoughts. x/x
