Today'sđź“·: German phosgene & chlorine attack 27 April 1916, Loos sector. British trenches middle & top. Concentration of gas intended to exhaust British PH Helmets. British casualties in 2 attacks 27&29 April 1,260 (338 died). Also 100s Germans killed & injured by own gas. #OTD
Trench map orientated to photo, German trenches red, British blue. The Germans installed cylinders to drift gas across British salient. Uncertainty of wind & twisting trench lines made it almost impossible not to gas one's own troops.
