The affects of colourism and preference for Light Skin / Mixed women has deeply worsened the treatment of Darkskin Black women. This is why the label “Black” can be disputed as too broadly used. The representation of a Black woman, is a mixed woman.
Having Blackness or experiencing the negative impacts of white supremacy is valid for Mixed people. Ofc. But for society to act like they r the ‘face’ of being Black is detrimental to DarkSkin Black people. Its erasure. Hence the hate towards Black women who are not of multi race
Dark Skin Black people (B/women face sexist intersection of disadv too) are the MOST oppressed in the entire world. Almost all stereotypes and labels have been negative up until social media prominence and the hard work within social movements (mostly by dark skin Black women).
Its key to note that the comparison of Black oppression to other marginalised groups is essential to understand the *severity* of hate aimed towards Dark Skin Black women, and not to invalidate other experiences of racism. (All experiences are deeply tragic).
An observation from pop culture is that Black women invented movements like #BlackGirlMagic (inclusive of all Blackness) and yet it seems that the only people to benefit from this are mixed and light skinned women. Which is very sad.
This is evident in the success rates of light skin and mixed Black women in the media. Which is the representation society consumes and internalises. It is also crucial to highlight that DarkSkin Black Women r bashed for their natural hair types. (4a+) unlike mixed hair (2c-3b).
The natural hair movement quickly tranformed into the Curly Girl movement or Curly Gang. Which often is fronted by a mixed girl with loose coils (should be present in media tho, not just Yt ppl straight hair). This is just further evidence of Dark Skin & African-centric erasure.
Most of this thread is observation based and the stance was formed by me absorbing personal stories told to me, and evidence within the media. I also have knowledge of white supremacist legacy and lasting influences. I am not trying to offend. Please feel free to add or confront.
I would also like to express the deep importance of protecting Mixed Race people. They are valid and society needs to do MORE to be inclusive of those who have multi-heritages. Also applying to biracials who are not white & Black. The topic is ever broadening.
