People who think the word is unnecessary have probably not talked about trans issues much. I find myself needing a word for "non-trans" often because the issue is often about cis people's attitudes or whether cis women's rights are threatened.
Some of you will say that that still doesn't make it necessary as you can just say "people" and "women" to mean "not trans" & reserve the qualifier for trans people who are the minority & the outliers but this necessarily implies that trans people are not people or women.
