I’ve been at this interior design thing for 7 years. Wow.
I didn’t know how it would turn out, but my passion was my drive. Didn’t want to be idle after school, so I bought myself a graduation gift.
December 2012, I started sewing beddings with my grad gift; a butterfly sewing machine. Learnt how to thread, sew bed sheets and pillowcases on YouTube. I must say, YouTube has been a major part of my growth.
During my service year, I continued learning how to sew. I had advanced to making quilts now. This I learnt by sitting and gisting with Yaba boys whilst making my beddings. Some designs were too complicated to learn, so I stuck to the simple ones.
After service (2014), I got a small contract through a friend I made in camp. Her dad wanted their house redecorated with wallpapers, so she recommended me. I was elated and at the same time, scared. Scared because I hadn’t done anything like that before...
Also didn’t want to disappoint my prospective clients and my sweet friend. So, I consulted my best friend, YouTube, on color schemes and wallpapering. That’s when I saw the light 😄 there was no going back from that point!
Luckily for me, I got the best hands to help with my first project. Mr Francis was fantastic! Got the best products too; RASCH wallpapers. RASCH is a German company that produces wallpapers, adhesives, etc. They have the best wallpapers I’ve worked with till date albeit pricey 😉
Got referrals, got more small deals, while learning on the job. I had picked interest in wallpapering because it was honestly the most beautiful thing I’d seen in my life😂 the way it transformed a room from zilch to paradise(in my head). I couldn’t stop dreaming lol.
Was excited to get a job as a sales rep at a retail store off Allen, Ikeja. Excited because they sold Rasch wallpapers 🤸🏽‍♀️, floorings, adhesives and more in large quantities. I learnt so much the little time I spent there.
Learnt how to take proper measurements of floors and walls, read floor plans, mix and match wallpapers, what flooring works where (residential, commercial, etc.). It was fun while it lasted.
Then it was time for my Masters😭 It was a tough period. Although, I aimed for distinction, I didn’t let that deter me from doing my thing; interior design on the side. We sha finished with a 4.0 and alhamdulillah 😁
2017, I had to decide if I wanted to use the little money I had saved up to rent a room in Lagos, and try to get a 9-5, or rent an office space in Abeokuta and use the change to set up🤔
Well, I decided to set up in Abeokuta. I soon realized it was a huge mistake as my target market wasn’t in Abk. Most of the people there didn’t think their houses needed redecorating, so I was stuck. Had to come up with a plan. Started sewing again 😔
Made all sorts of pillows, branded, Ankara, pregnancy, just name it lol. Added fashion design to the hustle too. Made beautiful women’s clothing but this wasn’t what I wanted. I was unfulfilled, sad and depressed plus enu gbe🤣
