So countless were the Ahmet son of Mehmets & Mehmet son of Ahmets when the first Turkish consensus was produced that a decree was issued forcing Turks to find themselves a proper surname.
After 18 months those who failed to find themselves a name were warned that they'd be fined & given a random one.
This prompted unimaginative sorts from Crete to call themselves Giritli (Mr & Mrs from Crete). Other surnames got a bit kray/inventive: overthrower of mountains, eagle-eyed, pure turk, lion-hearted, mr lightning and so on.
