Look...

The entire point of being a grown-up is that you shouldn‘t have to do what other people tell you anymore.

These arbitrary „grow-up“ requirements people make up?
Being grown-up means you DON‘T have to fulfill them!

🤷🏻

(Yes there is also a ton of ableism to unpack here) https://twitter.com/offbeatorbit/status/1254444078604914690
A lot of these „Do X - grow up!“ posts include things that should be under people‘s autonomous control regardless of age.

At least to a certain point.

In this case: it‘s nobodys business what others eat, unless they‘re your child. Even kids shouldn‘t be forced to eat things.
Shame is a powerful weapon.

„Grow up!“ posts use shame over being seen as „childish“ to exert control over people‘s behavior.

It‘s sinister.
Don‘t fall for it.

Turning 18 makes you an adult.
That‘s it. No other requirements.

(Legal adult age varies by country, but again: age)
If you want to learn more about why autistic people who are very selective about food aren‘t „picky eaters“, check out the piece I wrote about that.

Because getting falsely labeled and treated as „picky eaters“ for factual needs around food isn‘t funny. https://autistictic.com/2018/11/23/food-autism-eating/
Finally:

Arbitrary „grown-up“ requirements like spelling correctly, managing finances, working, not living with one‘s parents...

When adult disabled people can‘t do „grown-up“ things they‘re routinely FALSELY treated as children.

Such infantilization isn‘t funny, but harmful.
While abled people love making „Grow up!“ jokes, or use them to shame others into doing what they want...they are also part of upholding ableism in our society.

Be aware that disabled people exist, and that they WILL see/hear what you share. Any ableism? Keep it to yourself.
„I wasn‘t talking about disabled people!“

Did you specify you don‘t mean disabled people?
No? Well...

We know ableds never remember our existence, and then try to save face after the fact by claiming we weren’t meant.

Do better or deal with disabled people calling you out 🤷🏻
