It’s a slight stretch, but a series on 1990’s heavyweight boxing would be absolutely incredible. Great fights, yes, and boxing history, but the personalities on display are really what would make it. Tyson, Foreman, Holyfield, Lewis, Bowe, Golota, Moorer, Don King- what a range. https://twitter.com/lukeisamazing/status/1254579824905129984
Tyson going to prison and biting Holyfield’s ear off. Fan Man dive-bombing a heavyweight title fight, crashing into the ring and nearly pulling a lighting rig down on the crowd, then being beaten senseless by Bowe’s corner. George Foreman’s comeback. The doom of Ike Ibeabuchi.
Buster Douglas’s one great moment. Larry Holmes’ last stand against Ray Mercer. The rise and fall of Tommy Morrison and the racial politics of the fight game. Michael Moorer, Teddy Atlas, Andrew Golota and the lifelong battle to be someone, the psychology of being a fighter.
70’s heavyweights, the Ali-Frazier-Foreman Part 1 era, are justly regarded as the peak of the division. But the 90’s were close, and the combination of sporting greatness, insane and memorable incidents, and human drama made it every bit as memorable and dramatic.
