USMLE: “28 year old female presents with recurrent miscarriages....”

Me: Antiphospholipid Ab Syndrome on to the next question
In real life, this could be so many things. PID, cervical insufficiency, endometriosis, etc....

But on the test it’s so predictable.
And on the test you don’t have time to think about nuance. So you just go for pattern recognition.

We need to learn more than pattern recognition.
I get really good scores on test. And most of it is from pattern recognition alone. I look to the bottom and see +blood with no RBC I know rhabdo. I see PAS+ macrophages I know Whipples disease. Do I know anything else about Whipple’s disease??? Heck no. Cause I don’t need to.
@jbcarmody this is what the USMLE has taught me to do. Base my clinical judgment off of pattern recognition.

Will this make me a good doctor? Probable not.
