In light of yesterday‘s events I would like to remind the boudoir (usually male) photographers of Winnipeg the importance of consent. This doesn’t technically apply to myself as the pictures distributed yesterday can be found on my (now private) social media.
The reason? Because I want them to be. The photographer has my consent to post them & respects that. However, as yesterday’s events demonstrate, pictures can be manipulated to cause harm. It’s an unfortunate risk we accept with sharing content on social media.
With this fact, photographers MUST respect women when it comes to posting their content & when they reach out to have images taken down. In a year, 8 women have sought my help to get photographers to take down intimate photos that they didn’t want posted on instagram.
The response? Hostility. Claims it would disrupt aesthetic, undermine talent; gaslighting was common in every excuse. It was incredibly difficult for photographers to comprehend the necessity of consent, very concerning given their work within such an intimate area of photography
To see my own images used to cause harm to myself yesterday, photographers need to- I affirm- always reach out to women before they post a picture & take down pictures that women fear would it undermine safety, privacy or if it’s something they prefer to appreciate in private.
