Highlighting this exchange with @MDaware because this is a fantastic example of how to combat misinformation on social media. It’s important for several reasons. https://twitter.com/mdaware/status/1254565229620596736
First, this exchange was important because there was mutual respect between both parties.

As a communicator, do your part to maintain civil discourse. Don’t make the other person feel stupid for not recognizing misinformation.
I like what he did in the tweet and the following one. ⤵️

Here, he stated the issues with the video—not the person who had been sharing the clip (Larry).

What’s going on in this one? ⤵️

Seth is being empathetic to Larry’s position in this issue. He’s finding common ground which is important if your audience associates you or your degree with the “ivory tower.”

The convo continues and I’ll share some further thoughts, but think about how he approached the 1st few tweets. Seth didn’t immediately hit Larry w/ data. He created a conversation.

If you really want to persuade someone, don’t start w/ facts on the 1st tweet. Drive engagement.
Typo “facts” should be “data” ⤴️

People aren’t going to care about your fancy graphs and numbers.
I like that Seth requested the content be taken down. He explained why it should be removed.

Notice that he’s also referring to Larry by his first name. Do this. It helps people remember that there’s a human responding. Seems obvi, I know, but it helps.

Something else that’s worth mentioning about the tweet ⤴️

Seth asked for it to be removed. He didn’t demand that Larry do so.

Notice also that both people continue to engage though the original tweet remains. Don’t lose your cool. You have to be ok with that happening.
This tweet was awesome. I rarely see this happening between strangers with opposing views on the internet.

It builds trust and signals respect.

It’s also good to do because too often we combat misinfo and never engage again... Trolls do that, too.

You can click through and see the rest of the exchange. Seth combines facts and data with his own personal narrative.

It’s persuasive communication.

In side convos, he did get into the data. I like that he highlighted information.

Go on Seth’s profile and review all the different replies he made on Larry’s tweet.

This exchange was a huge win.

Why? Take off your hat as an expert in whatever field you’re in. Now, imagine yourself as an undecided lurker.
A lurker would see this exchange and Seth’s communication as being:

-Level-headed
-Respectful
-Considerate of other perspectives
-Non-elitist

That’s what you want to do. That’s what I mean when I say “do it for the lurkers.”

Ok, done. 🧶
