Some ppl may say that social distancing has flattened the curve enough that we won't see rationing. So why the worry? I'll tell you. These discriminatory standards of care aren't unique to #COVIDー19, & their existence sets a terrible precedent and is a threat to civil rights 4/8
We are already seeing rationing. When individuals in nursing homes other congregate settings are not able to receive treatment for COVID and workers in these settings are not able to access PPE because it's being prioritized for hospitals. That's rationing. 5/8
When individuals seek out medical intervention and are turned away only to die at home. That's rationing. https://www.newsweek.com/michigan-man-dies-coronavirus-repeatedly-turned-away-1499818 6/8
For the first time in US history, every state is under a major disaster declaration. Most disasters that we experience are geographically bound. If a healthcare system is strained, systems from neighboring states/regions can supplement local supplies. That cannot happen here. 7/8
If a concurrent major disaster, like a wildfire, major chemical spill, tornado, floods etc happens, we are unprepared and unequipped to manage a response to a catastrophic event on top of #COVIDー19. Medical rationing will happen, & disabled ppl will suffer the consequences. 8/8
How could I forget 2 very real concerns about rationing, 1 of which we already seeing. Disabled people being denied access to regular meds b/c they are being diverted to treat #COVID19 AND as states re-open we’re bound to see a surge of new cases https://www.foxnews.com/us/woman-lupus-denied-medication-coronavirus-treatment-chloroquine-kaiser-permanente 9/9
