A dear friend of mine died a year ago. Her death was entirely preventable. She lost her health insurance coverage because she left a job to be self-employed AND moved across state borders. Her last post on social media was about rationing medication.
About 4 years ago, my best friend died a preventable death after a 15-year fight for a diagnosis. She was marked as a ‘drug seeker’ because her rare condition was so frequently dismissed in the ED. At one point, hospital personnel handcuffed her to her bed & tossed her meds.
10 years ago, my grandmother died a preventable death after her doctor sent her home, dismissing her heart attack symptoms as heartburn. She has another one, & did not recover from the surgical intervention.
These are all people who were near & dear to me.

Their premature deaths reflect broader societal & structural injustices. They are why I chose this work instead of going into law.

The patient whose life gets mined for ‘story time’ on Twitter is someone’s loved one.
