If your a student at a college or university that hasn't contacted you about shifting the meetings times of some of the fall classes you registered for, you are almost definitely going to be doing remote learning next semester
Colleges, especially in the vicinity of hotspots, will have to offer more Friday classes, more weekend classes, more evening classes and more twice and three times a week classes. Most colleges look like a lockdown on Fridays. That's not an option over the next couple years
I don't see any school really doing that so I suspect most of them will remain closed next semester. It's not just students. Professors don't want to teach Friday (or evening/weekend) classes either. But I don't see a way around it. Also can't have all your admin staff doing 9-5
It's unfortunate because in some ways higher ed is pretty well suited to adapt to these new norms. Their students and professors generally have flexible schedules and there is a lot of down time. They are just being too brittle. The ones who adapt will survive and thrive
I'm aware of the irony in starting this thread off with a glaring grammarical error
