"His achievements and tastes as an artist aren't crystallized in the same way the stats and moves of an athlete, the usual source of sneaker models, are. Plus, unlike Jordan, his non-sneaker body of work is still evolving." - @brendandunne (Yeezy possible retro)
Although I don’t fully agree with the statement I think that artist do hold the same iconic moments as athletes in their own respective craft.
Although I wasn’t around for the Run DMC era of music I know what the shell toe Adidas stands for and the impact it have on culture and the footwear industry alike.
No matter how much Michael Jordan was cool without Spike Lee and mars Blackman character Jordan brand wouldn’t be to the pinnacle brand it is today in culture.
Although Mike won his first championship in the Jordan 6 immortalizing the shoe in footwear history. The Jordan 5 torch was carried by Will Smith and brought T.V awareness to streetwear, fashion and music too.
Although David Robinson wore the Air Force command it wasn’t until Woody Allen aka Billy Hoyle wore them in “White Men Can’t Jump” because did they become symbolic.
Martin giving this sneaker to this little boy meant way more than Michael ever wearing Taxi Jordan 12’s on court:
Last but certainly not least Michael J. Fox a.k.a. Marty McFly with the Air Mag:
Anyway you cut it an artist who is performing at the highest level of their craft has the same impact on culture as much as any athlete does.
These two photos hold the same weight in Sneakers, Streetwear, Culture and Fashion.
Commercials like the “ #KOBESYSTEM LEVEL 6 BEASTION” only makes this theory all the more true:
3 of the 6 men in this photo have now had collaboration at nike and their sneaker still “Go for the high” as the kids would say.
Virgil being a student of the Kanye West university has not only excelled at Nike but far exceeded expectations of Mark Parker, Kanye and maybe even Phil Knight expected him to do in the past two years.
So much so that the 2015 Chicago Jordan 1 compared to the off-white Chicago Jordan 1 doesn’t even compare in price on the resell market.
Nike won’t release the Yeezy 1 or the Yeezy 2 because it’s too problematic. PERIOD. So if you have them hold on to them.
