(1/6) So the Cubans are here! <Thread>

Likely in part in solidarity with a fellow red regime. More so because this is just how Cuba do. At an estimated $8 billion pa, medical skill exports generates nearly 10% of Cuban GDP.

(2/6) BUT WE HAVE DOCTORS WAITING FOR JOBS. I hear you shout. True. But we also pay our doctors a fairly respectable rate. Cuban doctors are paid significantly less than the doctors in their host nation. But much more than the ~$70 per month they would be paid back home.
(3/6) To illustrate this we turn to an example from Brazil from a few years back. Brazil pays $4150pm to each Cuban Dr. Of this the Drs only receive $1000 of which 60% is deposited in bank accs in Cuba, which can only be accessed on return to Cuba once their mission is complete.
(6/6) So why are they here? How much exactly are we paying? I can't say I'm not grateful for any additional medical hands on deck during this pandemic. However as with anything involving government, one would be wise to remain vigilant around the financials of this deal.
