As it's Sunday, a quick thread on churches and Neolithic/Bronze Age remains. We’re familiar with Knowlton, where a Norman church was built within a henge, and Rudston, where a huge standing stone dominates the churchyard. But are they just isolated examples? 1/4 #MuseumsUnlocked
In 1912 W Johnson’s ‘Byways in British Archaeology’ raised this issue. The claims are hard to check as we don’t often get to dig up churches or churchyards. But Saxon specialists have written about the reuse of prehistoric sites, mainly barrows, for burials 2/4 #MuseumsUnlocked
What should we be looking for at church sites? A few Hampshire examples - some places have reports of antiquarian finds, like Twyford, where there is supposed to be a stone circle under the church, and a couple of stray sarsens can be seen in the vicinity 3/4 #MuseumsUnlocked
Some churches are built on mounds which have yet to be investigated, as at Cheriton or Corhampton; others have intriguingly circular churchyards, like Brockenhurst - so maybe worth taking a look at your local church while you exercise...? 4/4 #MuseumsUnlocked
