A quick Cold War related observation about Tom Cotton and his thing about Chinese students: There& #39;s a reason the USSR didn& #39;t want its students studying in the United States or any other Western countries. They knew it would wreck them, ideologically. /1
Cotton is splitting the argument between "we& #39;re training the enemy" and "they& #39;ll take er jerbs."
1. They will go somewhere. This isn& #39;t 1950 and MIT and CalTech aren& #39;t the only game in town.
2. If American kids won& #39;t study STEM and become bilingual, that& #39;s *our problem. /2
don& #39;t think Cotton is dumb enough to think that sending Chinese students home will matter. In fact, he& #39;s smart enough to know that this helps cement the "everything is China& #39;s fault" narrative that will underpin supporting Trump. And maybe he& #39;s still angling for DCIA. /3
I& #39;ll just say that if we& #39;d trained a lot of Soviet students in the United States, that yes, it would have helped the USSR in some areas. And it would have messed up the Kremlin& #39;s head in many more. They should fear it more than we do, but alas. /4x
