I’ve seen Black folx ID as socialist, communist, anti-capitalists, Black radicals, etc., then turn around and discuss their desire to build “generational wealth” (in the form of money/property). wondering how y’all reconcile that? Cuz in this context you’d need to be a capitalist
I guess I’m just wondering why “generational wealth” is still such a concern? Even in circles that claim to seek the fall of capitalism , and therefore wealth and money?
What would it look like to reframe what we want to pass on? Cuz what we really want is ALL Black folx having the resources (food, clothing, shelter, opportunity) to self determinate. Right? And hoarding “wealth” under capitalism prevents this.
I’m a poor nigga. So I know well things that are done to survive capitalism. But there’s a big difference between that and hoarding wealth for generations. We say we want a new world, so let’s build it. Our ancestors laid the framework for how to operate beyond capitalism.
Often, when I critique people’s obsession with “generational wealth”, I am accused of not wanting my future kids to eat. I want my kids to eat, but not because someone else’s kids aren’t eating. I want to create a world where ALL Black children have what they need.
Under capitalism: “my kids have their needs met because other kids do not.”

Beyond capitalism: “my kids have their needs met and others kids have their needs met as well.”
