Right so a thread then since you all leapt on that.

General note; I usually layout + letter everything so assume that unless otherwise stated!! https://twitter.com/neonlanterns/status/1254489268602449920
2018: I self published 3 books and promptly nuked them outta my portfolios, i had only work from my degree to show.

My first anthology gig, page rate, full colour ; £50 per page, double what Nobrow is apparently offering.
Second gig; £85 per page to ink and colour. Someone else lettered! I wanted more pay & got given the opportunity for that.

Third gig: £60 per page, lower because different sort of work+ different org. Initially was a lower but they got more funding which meant more pay!
4th: 100£ per page, full colour, i negotiated to settle the price
Ah I forgot another gig before that, also quoted for £100 per page.

Again you can look at my portfolio, I have not published with any big press. These are all indie presses & private clients.
2019:
Got asked to do paid spec work for a job: £120 per page. Lost a bit in transfer fees but thats why we set high prices :,)

Next job: £100 per page, took a lot of negotiating including lowering overall page count to settle on a price, it was tought, I’m still mad about it
Ah, also forgot another job! Small anthology, £50 per page!
Most recent job, with agent, 2020: £225 per page. I wanted to push to £150 at least nefore I got rep and after talking it over we pushed high! It works in my favour especially when working internationally and having to take account of how transfers amd conversions are gonna hit
You can see the price fluctuated a lot! Because every job is different, and that’s normal. I took hits in parts but I think you should always keep trying to negotiate up! The rate I’m at is right for my work and the input I do in each project. I’m not getting royalties for any-
As hey, I’ve still not published a full book! I’m getting WFH working on other IPs or non fiction and anthology work. GNs don’t break into the same rates but also...your page rate should absolutely be higher.
Aside from the current discourse, we should all be more transparent with eachother about what we’re being paid, and whos paying what.

There are MANY presses that pay badly. But also not every publisher has the same amount of money in the pot, and also
Paraphrasing a good and wise friend, sometimes you need to eat.

So I don’t blame anyone for taking jobs under their rate- sometimes you need the money, sometimes the job is something your passionate about!! The most recent anthology i was in was defo the latter haha
But this is a wider industry problem, that wont get fixed until we recognise it it a wider problem and negotiate up.

The bar will not be raised until we push it
