This week’s @ICNARC report throws out interesting facts!

@ActuaryByDay has done his excellent weekly analysis

But as I was reading the report, a few things did jump out at me

So here’s a short thread.
Numbers:

Why did we need this massive effort of expanding ICU capacity?

As you can see here, we have seen more patients with #COVID19 admitted to ICUs nationally, than the total number of viral pneumonias (mainly flu) in 3 years
These patients have been much fitter than the comparator group (look at assistance required with daily activities).

Still, the mortality rate in ICU has been ~2x that of previous data on viral pneumonias
The idiot commentators who’ve been talking about how this only affects the elderly:
look at the age distribution

1/5th of People <40 who needed ICU with COVID died. That’s normally our overall mortality, averaged among all patients

1:4 icu patients between 40-50years also died
Also, if your lungs and kidneys both needed support, you had a 75% (that’s 3:4) chance of dying

Patients needing respiratory, cardiovascular and kidney support: nearly 9/10 died
Everyday at work, I see people my age or younger in ICU. Lots are very sick

Many have died

And before people like Musk or Gu pop up and talk about ventilators...

Yes, this table does show people treated with invasive ventilation had higher mortality than ones who were not intubated

Think, just think: is it likely the patients not intubated had milder disease?
