Every student should read up the UGC Anti-Ragging Rules.

Here is an incident where the rules came in handy and saved me bigg time...
I am student at a Mumbai University affiliated college.

As many of you know, Mumbai University Faculty of Law recently adopted the new 60:40 CBGS system.

This leaves 40 marks in the hands of the profs; giving them immense power with no checks and balances.
One of my profs enjoyed a daily ritual of student bashing at the start of her lecture.

Every day, at the start of her lecture, she would tell us for 10 long mins how worthless and useless we are.
We were okay with it, nobody took it to heart; tbh, nobody cared. She blabbered and we listened; it was routine.

This turned into full fledged bullying over time...

She would pick on students, asking them personal questions and bashing them; telling them how useless they are...
One day, Prof was distributing topics for the internal assessment projects.

Prof and I had a disagreement over something negligible.

She lost her mind and started with the usual bullying; only this time it was much much harsher. I lost it too, it was a full blown argument...
The fact that I questioned her back and argued with her, offended her way too much.

She held the whole class hostage. Refused to share topics and teach if I did not leave. (Yes, just like Boman Irani did with Sanjay Datt in Munna Bhai MBBS)
This is when the UGC Anti-Ragging Rules popped in my head...

The definitions are very wide and the rules recognize that professors too can indulge in ragging. It has a broad scope, has definitions like 'misuse of authority to derive sadistic pleasure'
In the heat of the moment, I recited from memory, the definition from the UGC rules and informed her that her actions lacked cause, were in excess of normal standards and amounted to ragging.
It took her a second to grasp what I has said... But the minute it hit her, her facial expression changed.

She understood that I would register a complain if I had to.

Prof backed off; continued the lecture as normal and left, no words were exchanged after that.
I spoke to a few other students & found that such behavior was routine and many had been subjected to it.

Been a couple months since this happened. Prof hasn't been rude to me or anyone since. Faculty as a whole too suddenly became a bit nicer, lesser bullying & picking overall.
Read the rules and warn people that you will invoke them.

These rules exist for a reason. Don't let people f you over for no reason.
