Adding to what I said re: ignorance being no excuse for causing offense. I see a lot of white people/cishet make that argument: “But I didn’t know! They shouldn’t be mad at me.” It doesn’t matter if you were ignorant. There was still damage done. 1/6
You shouldn’t expect someone to automatically forgive you because you hurt them out of ignorance. That’s privilege. Just bc I thought the hand clap between every word was just a Twitter thing doesn’t make it any less inappropriate that I used it. 2/6
Recognizing my ignorance & learning from it is my responsibility, not expecting people to “understand me”. I usually avoid using gifs/memes unless I know what movie they’re from, but had applied that to visual memes. That’s a fault of mine. 3/6
I’ve said before that the pop culture I know is from another century, so that’s another way I’m ignorant. I’m likely to make blunders (some hilarious, some problematic) as a result of not being aware of mainstream culture. So I'm learning. 4/6
I have 5 degrees & yet what I feel most is how much more I have left to learn.

Please know I will keep reflecting on this experience. I want to be a better ally & advocate. White allies need to shoulder the emotional burden of educating other white people. 5/6
I was also able to write this thread today when I am awake & clear headed. That is also a lesson to me to not be on Twitter past my bedtime when I’m too tired to make 1) good choices, 2) coherent thoughts. 6/6
