Thread: Eating during the Azaan at Suhoor. A misconception

It is obligatory for the fasting person to refrain from drinking & eating from dawn to dusk,

“eat & drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to u distinct from the black thread (darkness of night)”
[2:187]
A lot of people believe that after the Azaan has been called, eating is permissible until the Azaan ends, based on the following Hadith:
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah RA said: The Messenger of Allaah PBUH said: “If one of you hears the call (to prayer) and the vessel is still in his hand, let him not put it down until he finished with it.” [Abu Dawood:2350]

one interpretation of this narration is that,
Its about Azaan of Maghrib during iftaar i.e if Maghrib's Azaan is called and one has a receptacle in his hand, he should not leave until satisfying his needs.

Whereas, Imam Al-Bayhaqi said this narration is according to the majority of Muslim scholars,
linked its meaning with the fact that the Prophet PBUH knew that Azaan is called before dawn.

- How did Hazrat Bilal RA know when to call the Azaan.

Read another Hadith,
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud
The Prophet PBUH said, "The call (or the Adhan) of Bilal should not stop you from taking the Suhur-meals for Bilal calls (the Adhan) so that the one who is offering the night prayer should take a rest, and he does not indicate the daybreak or dawn.
[Bukhari:219]

Another Hadith:

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar RA:
The Prophet Pbuh said, "Bilal pronounces the Adhan when it is still night (before dawn), so eat and drink till the next Adhan is pronounced (or till you hear Ibn Um Maktum's Adhan)."
Ibn-e-Um Maktum was a blind man who would not pronounce the Adhan till he was told that it was dawn.
[Bukhari 824]

Hence, scholars concluded that there were either two Azaans called during the times of Prophet PBUH or He knew which azaan indicated the time of dawn.
Imam Nawawi said: 'We mentioned that when the Fajr appears while one has something in his mouth, he should spit it out and complete his fasting. But if he swallows it then his fasting is nullified and there is no disagreement over this issue.
Therefore, in the current era the Azaan is called based on the calendar time of dawn hence we should refrain from eating the moment azaan is called & Allah knows best.

The end.
