When I was an editor of the Roslyn HS student newspaper, superintendent Frank Tassone stole $11M from the school and no one noticed. A student journalist a few years after me broke the story, though, and last night there was a pretty good movie (‘Bad Education’) about it on HBO.
I don’t remember Tassone being the beloved figure portrayed by Hugh Jackman. He was a weirdo. When I was a senior he went on ‘Hard Copy’ to tout fen-phen, a controversial weight-loss drug later taken off the market because it can kill you. I dug up some photos for this thread.
Tassone said he would have my college acceptance revoked (?) if we didn’t install a school board member’s son as the paper’s new editor. My parents had to sign a confidentiality agreement — it was a whole thing.

Anyway, he’s out of prison now and gets a $174k annual pension. 🙃
