The following is historic fact as reported by former Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara in his book In Retrospect, about the Vietnam war (which we lost, largely under his leadership.)
🏮
2. Over the course of the Vietnam War, the United States dropped more tons of bombs on tiny North Vietnam, smaller than Missouri, than were dropped on all of Europe by both sides in all of World War II, but North Vietnam never lost her ability to produce and distribute food.
3. This is because, at the time of the war, North Vietnam's food system was 100% local farms, producing with biological power (water buffalo) in all local areas for local consumption.
It required no non-local fuel, and no distribution network, to feed all their people.
4.We, in all our much-vaunted Most Powerful blah blah, cannot equal their success. https://www.politico.com/amp/news/2020/04/26/food-banks-coronavirus-agriculture-usda-207215?__twitter_impression=true
5. Understand this clearly:
An oxen-powered, oxcart distributed, tiny "third world" country was able to defeat the so-called "Most powerful country on Earth," because of the clear technological superiority of their production and distribution system.
We are losing again.
6. It does not matter how fast, or how profitable, or how man-hour productive, a system is, if it cannot continue to operate and perform its function of feeding all the people, when faced with a clearly foreseeable failure.
7. And this pandemic was foreseen.
Yes, the Obama administration left instructions for how to limit it by early shutdown of our large scale economic system. But they didn't leave any plans for producing and distributing food.
We have seen the proof. The proof whipped us.
8. And now Americans don't ask, "Why does all our food have to be shipped thousands of miles between production and consumption," they ask, "Why doesn't someone magically make our production and distribution system work during social distancing?"
Because we refuse to question.
9. There is no way to make a centralized food production system feed a distributed population through any disruption event.
