Should Pavard drop back in the buildup due to his attacking deficiencies & offer us more defensive stability? The answer is: NO. I will explain why in this thread.

This current system that we have, only supports fullbacks who stay both up, not one up, and one down. It's insanity
“Pavard should drop deep to offer defensive stability, I rather have a RB who can defend than a RB who can’t defend.”

It’s naive thinking to even say such because our current system itself does not support fullbacks who drop deep in the buildup but those who stay high !
And it also explain why do we play with a HIGH LINE!

And yes, we desperately need an attacking fullback with similar qualities of Davies.

Anyway, let’s get to the point.
Picture 1). This is the 4231 which we usually use. An example of 4231 being used this season with Kimmich Thiago double pivot, Pavard Davies the fullbacks and Alaba Boateng the CBs.
2) The interchange of positions this season when on build up (I’m always talking about Flick era). Kimmich drops between the 2 CBs, creates a back 3 defensive line, while Pavard & Davies stay high up the pitch near the middle line.
Thiago in the middle of the pitch acting the box 2 box, winning and recycling the ball, Kimmich drops back because he can use his vision much better at the back, which is why he is preferred as a DM.
3) How our buildup would look like IF you tell Pavard to drop back. Pavard’s drop would leave Gnabry confused, if he drops back to cover the area left by Pavard, there’d be no threat in the right and if Gnabry stayed on his place, the middle line would be another left gap
This would totally kill our structure. This would rather offer us deficiency in our structure than solve us defensive stability. Remember, we play in a HIGH LINE. There is however another option in case this drop should be considered, but wouldn’t solve anything, again.
4) If Pavard’s drop happens, Muller will have to be forced to go in the right side, then have Thiago go more forward, with Kimmich also going more forward out of his defensive line to cover the gaps. Pavard is now playing as a RCB, a role which suits him more than RB
Kimmich now has the role of a b2b, b2b is not his role. We’d need a b2b in the middle, or be vulnerable because this role is much better suited for Thiago, not Kimmich. Even Gnabry would be prevented to make his runs due to Muller blocking his path in the right.
And Gnabry will be eventually forced to invert himself centrally. While Muller would prefer to stay behind the striker than on the right (during the build up, remember, we're talking about the build up) even this option again won't solve anything.
Muller exchanges roles with Gnabry (or Coman/Perisic) & Pavard on flanks but only happens when we’re in attack & crossing and not during the buildup. We’ve only seen Pavard operating in the right flank with Muller and the other winger. This is what we’ve been doing all season
Pavard has not been told to drop back because it’s known and also shown in the pictures that the move will give us more deficiencies than advantages. There is a reason why Flick demanded a right back in winter, also because of depth, but more because Pavard doesn’t suit as a RB.
This system supports flashy overlapping fullbacks. A move like that “to offer defensive stability” ruins the whole structure and should never be considered. The fact that Pavard has done a good job as a RB, (which I agree) he can of course be a good backup RB, that’s it.
There's a reason why Davies is playing as a LB. His qualities suit much perfect as a LB & he’s shown that. You just can’t have the left side full attack with Davies and then have Gnabry totally alone without a RB (Pavard dropping) who could’ve helped him with overlapping runs.
I see Pavard more as a CB than a RB, he’s also said that. The fact that Bayern fans want Upamecano at all costs just makes my head spin. He'd be a useless signing. He's too good to sit on the bench, furthermore, he is also injury prone and doesn’t want to be a 3rd or 4th choice.
We have the perfect CB in Pavard, solid defensively, a very decent ball distributor. It’s true he has done a very good job at RB but he shouldn’t be our permanent choice at RB especially when the coach himself wants another RB. He probably recognizes Pavard’s much better as a CB
And furthermore, Pavard has played almost every minute for Bayern, and is not injury prone. Why do we need Upamecano when we have Pavard who can play as a CB? Also don’t sell Boateng. He should be able to accept the bench as soon as Sule comes back from the injury.
Assuming that Sane and a new RB comes, this is how our 4231 will look in the future and how our build up will usually look, with Pavard as a RCB. I’d much rather see this and I can’t wait to see it next season how it will work.

I wanted to make other additional comments but the thread is already long so I will attach the link of this thread I made on why I think we should buy a RB in summer and let Pavard play CB.
