The Greatest Substitutions In Football History — A Thread⬇️
Solskjaer & Sheringham (United) vs Bayern —
We may as well start the thread with the most legendary substitution of all time. In the ‘99 Champions League final, United were down 1-0, prompting Sir Alex to bring on his two sub strikers. You know the rest.
Tim Krul (Netherlands) vs Costa Rica
Madness? Or Genius?
In the 2014 World Cup, the Quarter Final between the Netherlands and Costa Rica was just seconds from a shoot-out. The Dutch took the unusual step of replacing their keeper, and it worked wonders.
Federico Macheda (Man United) vs Aston Villa —
In the midst of the 2008/09 PL title race, United were in need of a late winner with the game poised at 2-2. United made a huge gamble, bringing on the 17 year-old to make his debut. Then he did this.
Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) v Wolfsburg
Down 1-0 at half time, Guardiola responded by making a double substitution, including marksman Lewandowski. By the 60th minute, Bayern led 5-1.
Guess who scored all 5.
Sergi Roberto (Barcelona) vs PSG —Arguably the greatest game in Champions League history, this extraordinary comeback was completed by Roberto with just seconds remaining. The Spaniard was brought on in the 76th minute.
Gareth Bale (Real Madrid) v Liverpool —
Bale was introduced in the 61st minute, replacing Isco with the game at 1-1. He then scored twice, including one of the greatest goals in recent memory, securing yet another Champions League triumph for Los Blancos.
Georginio Wijnaldum (Liverpool) v Barcelona —
Liverpool were 3-0 down from the first leg, and needed to produce a near-impossible comeback to reach the CL Final. Wijnaldum came on at half-time and scored twice to turn the game on its head.
Mario Gotze (Germany) vs Argentina
Starting the game as a sub, Gotze was introduced to the World Cup Final with a few minutes left in normal time. With the game at 0-0 in the 113th minute, Gotze became a global sensation with this extra-time winner.
Danny Welbeck (Arsenal) vs Leicester —
In the 2015/16 season, both Arsenal and Leicester were battling it out at the top of the table, and met at the Emirates in February. After 10 months out, and with the game at 1-1, Welbeck was brought on and did this!
Tony Watt (Celtic) vs Barcelona —
On 7th November, 2012, boyhood Celtic fan Tony Watt was brought on in the second half with his team staggeringly up 1-0 against the then best team in the world. He then did this to secure an unforgettable win.
Dwight Gayle (Palace) vs Liverpool —
After slipping up (no pun intended) vs Chelsea the previous weekend, The Reds needed to win to stay in the title race. They went up 3-0, but 3 late goals, including 2 from sub Gayle, completed an incredible comeback. https://amp.twimg.com/v/0ffb5bca-ad09-4d5f-bb88-ba853affe9c0
Ibai Gomez — 2013/2014
Real Madrid lead 1-0 at the San Mames against Athletic Bilbao. Ibai Gomez is brought on and his first action is to take a freekick. He follows up his first touch with this CORKER!
Ben Watson (Wigan) vs Man City

Brought on in the second half, Watson scored this bullet header, proving to be the winner in a famous FA Cup triumph for Wigan Athletic.
Eder (Portugal) vs France
After Ronaldo was forced off with an injury early in the game, Portugal needed another player to step up for them. Who would have guessed it was going to be Eder to crown them European Champions?
