Two things are heavy on my heart this morning in the world of education
1. I am in a FB group to “adopt a senior” in the charleston area. I’ve been looking for former students of mine to “adopt” but have been specifically looking for ones going into education fields. Out of the 200 kids I’m pulling from - 2...TWO want to be educators.
There are so many reasons for this but it is devastating to me. I hope this sample doesn’t represent the future teaching force but I know that it does. Lack of diversity, lack of interest, lack of respect for the progression socially.
Kids are gonna keep showing up in school buildings, but will there be any educators to fill the positions?

2. I surveyed my 4th grade gifted and talented students to see who wanted to continue the invention competition we’ve been working on in class prior to the closure..a project most of them have been looking forward to for two years in the ACE program.
While I am proud of their self-awareness, I am crushed that about half of them explained that they were too stressed out with the amount of work they have to complete each day for their regular classes.
I told them that I respected their choices, admired their ability to take care of themselves and prioritize their work, and offered support. But it hurt. I’m sad. I hope that with another week or so, it will be more manageable and they will rejoin. And I will be here either way.
Okay time to do laundry
