It’s utterly insane that we’d have a president this lawless and the opposing-party House would make so little effort to investigate or check him. It’s utterly insane that 26 million people would lose their jobs while the House is in a neverending recess. It just is.
When the history of this era is written it’s not going to be only about Trump and his outrageous behavior. It’s going to be about how Trump’s outrageous behavior was enabled by his cowed, quiescent, feckless opposition.
A lot of factors got us in this mess - aging, exhausted party leaders; a fixation on a tiny number of swing voters - but the core problem is that Dem leadership sees politics as quicksand: you’re always sinking, and any movement or activity will just make you sink faster.
If you see politics entirely in terms of how any action will backfire, you’re inevitably going to be paralyzed, unable to take advantage of opportunities or respond to crises, waiting to see whether you’ll be magically delivered from your persecutors or, more likely, are doomed.
