Been talking to a lot of students lately who are supposed to be entering the workforce in a few weeks time. There’s a significant amount of anxiety, especially among those who don’t have a safety net to fall back on or homes to go to. This is my advice, curious about others:
1) Keep applying. If someone has a job posting they will need to fill the position. If you don’t throw your name in the hat, others will.
2) Look at freelancing/gig economy opportunities. We sometimes need surge support for tasks like cleaning data for relevancy (machines don’t catch everything—looking at you, platforms) that can totally be done from home and on an hourly basis. Other companies will too.
3) Elections are still going to happen. Get involved with a candidate you believe in if you can. Even as a volunteer opportunity a few hours a week is structure and on your resume. Everything you need to learn about hustle you can learn in one cycle from team field.
4) Learn to code. I, for one, only know the basics and enough to be able to work with engineers—even that is a skill. Fumble around in a command line and get comfortable with it. There are lots of online/free resources. Our digital economy is going to need you.
5) Stay positive. No matter your major, the skills you learned in college include how to think creatively, how to manage your workload, and how to take initiative. Call your mentors, call your friends, accept there will be highs and lows, but never ever give up.
