What is the role of children in #transmission of #coronavirus #SARSCov2? The scientific jury appears to be still out, though thankfully more data & studies now surfacing & debated. Below sharing links with relevance to transmission by #children #covid19 #schools
From data Asia, Iceland & Italy @SiouxsieW distills that children likely do not play a major role in transmission. See https://thespinoff.co.nz/society/23-04-2020/siouxsie-wiles-what-we-know-about-children-and-covid-19/. Similar conclusions @rivm (though @c_drosten has cautioned Dutch data not statistically significant yet) https://www.rivm.nl/en/novel-coronavirus-covid-19/children-and-covid-19
News from Australia today: (not yet peer reviewed) study tracking 9 teachers & 9 students in 15 schools. "One child presumed infected by other student(s), one by teacher". Apparently no other infections after close contact with infected students/teachers. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-26/nsw-health-report-tracking-coronavirus-covid-19-cases-in-schools/12185582
Seems relevant to include the perspective of a pediatrician. The below is data from @CDC shared by a @HopkinsMedicine cardiologist and professor of pediatrics (more on symptoms children and less on transmission, though concerns expressed). https://twitter.com/ShelbyKuttyMD/status/1250550743158992902?s=20
Do #children have a high viral load when they are infected? This February article suggests a baby without symptoms had a high viral load in its throat. Caution: one case study. Hope others have more data / have not found much on this piece of the puzzle. https://academic.oup.com/cid/advance-article/doi/10.1093/cid/ciaa201/5766416#.Xl-Agr52h70.twitter
Another interesting perspective is that from a new study on the apparent geographical spread of the virus in a German municipality (whether transmission by kids, teachers and/or parents). See preliminary data here, follow @EddaKlipp for updates. https://twitter.com/EddaKlipp/status/1252903651166883840?s=20
Final perspective: classrooms. I wish weather would allow all classes to take place outside. Hope #schools will take into account studies on spread virus via tiny droplets and/or aerosols => consider air flow in class. See https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1253710609692209153?s=20 and https://twitter.com/linseymarr/status/1253328631356461061?s=20
Adding this thread on schools and transmission by children, by an epidemiologist working in Australia. Good to see this Q getting more attention, with experts sharing different data and perspectives. Puzzle becomes more complete; still key pieces missing. https://twitter.com/DrZoeHyde/status/1254339292433747969?s=20
