Me & @Merl_Alderslade we’re just having a chat about bands discographies, & I thought about that re: the conversation we were having about the new @TriviumOfficial album. How many metal bands are genuinely at their best on their 8th & 9th album? Follow this thread to find out...
Sin And The Sentence and Dead Men... are at least AS good as any other album they’ve put out. Don’t think that’s controversial. But what about other metal bands comparatively? Let’s see; Metallica’s 8 & 9 are St Anger and Death Magnetic. Trivium clear winner there for me...
Iron Maiden. I mean, y’all know I’m not much of a Maiden fan, but even speaking objectively, does anyone really think No Prayer For The Dying or Fear Of The Dark are their best work? Didn’t think so. Trivium again for me.
Black Sabbath. Never Say Die is a stinker. One good song really innit. And yes, Heaven And Hell is an almighty comeback record. But, for me, it doesn’t save them here. Trivium again.
Slayer. Gods Hates Us All is a Fuckjng fantastic record. BUT Diablos In Musica is the worst thing they ever did. On that basis it has to be Trivium again.
Megadeth. Easy one this. Risk and The World Needs A Hero. Did I even need to say any more...? Trivium by a mile.
Anthrax. Volume 8 and We’ve Come For You All. I actually think Volume 8 is much better than it’s given credit for, and We’ve Come For You All is really wicked. Saying that though, even if Volume 8 is better than you remember... it ain’t that good by comparison. Still Trivs.
Sepultura. Nation and Roorback. This is a bloodbath. Trivium. All day.
Machine Head. Bloodstone And Diamonds is great. Really great. Catharsis really isn’t. Bit like Slayer the overall package is good but it’s brought down by its worst parts. Trivium.
Killswitch Engage. They only have 8 albums. The last one is not as good as either of the last two Trivium albums. So...
I’m Flames. Come Clarity is an incredible record. And might be the best of the four in contention here. But A Sense Of Purpose is not up to it for me. It’s close. But I’m going trivium again.
Korn. Ugh. Oh dear. Korn have come back really strong so this might be a bit unfair. But that second self titled and Korn III? Nah mate. Easy pickings.
Lamb Of God. Only 8 records. Prefer both the previous Trivium records to Strum Und Drang for me.
Slipknot, Avenged, Ghost, Gojira, Pantera, System and Code Orange haven’t made it up to 8 albums yet. We can dive into the underground (Napalm Death I’ll give you) and definitely the likes of Mastodon deserve a shout here. But for the big time major metal bands, that’s about it.
So when that big book of the history of heavy metal is written I’m gonna want that band in there. That was my point basically.
