Chelsea’s Next Academy Graduate?
Ian Maatsen

Chslsea’s Left Back Situation & How could he join the senior squad next season?
A thread⬇️
His Qualities

Raised on Dutch football, he possesses the technical qualities to play for Chelsea. His pace, energy & determination mirrors Ashley Cole and he has what it takes to be a modern attacking full back. Only issue is his inexperience & physical stature only being 18.
Current LB’s
Emerson began the season incredibly well but a reoccurrence of his injuries stopped him continuing the good early season form. He’s a great ball carrier capable of going past players & has shown to be more switched on defensively than Alonso
Alonso is very effective in the final third, scoring big goals vs Spurs, Bournemouth & Newcastle. Defensively he is suspect, as most teams target him with runs in behind as his positional awareness is poor & he doesn’t have the pace to recover
Options

Chelsea have been heavily linked with Porto LB Alex Telles, who has impressed in Portugal. Entering his prime years, his stats show defensively he’s effective whilst his attacking stats are incredibly good. Other options include...(1/2)
Chilwell of Leicester, an England international & one of the PL’s best. The price tag for him is high with lower cost options around, it’s unlikely. Grimaldo of Benfica is another target who has impressed over a few seasons but no sources have reported it
Verdict

At minimum, one of Chelsea’s left backs should leave. Emerson is likely to be injured a lot meaning it will be hard to have a consistent run in the team. Alonso struggles in a back 4 defensively & it seems there are better options out there...(1/2)
It’s not out of the question to sell both here. Losing that experience is tough but bringing in Telles for 40m means an experienced left back in his prime takes over. Promoting Ian Maatsen for backup seems a full proof idea. Only 18, he would join a team thriving with youth...
he could be the next graduate to join the squad. He’s already featured a few times & Lampard is a big fan. Using him in the backup role would give him a chance to develop behind the senior left back. One day, he would take over the starting role for potentially a long time.
