The story of Prophet Yunus and his People is a very fascinating one.

His people were doomed to suffer the wrath of Allah just like the tribes of 'Ad, Thamud and Madyan before them.
It followed the same pattern.

The people engage in Idolatry.

A prophet is raised among them calling them to monotheism.

They disbelieve and ridicule him.

He warns them of the impending doom should they continue.

They remain obstinate and were thus eventually destroyed.
The people of Prophet Yunus had ticked all boxes so it was a matter of time until Allah destroyed them but something strange happened. Prophet Yunus left them without a divine command to do so.

He assumed they will suffer the wrath of Allah because of their transgressions.
When the clouds changed, according to narrations, indicating the imminent doom, the people were shaken so they started invoking Allah sincerely.

Never despair of the Mercy of Allah! Never!

Allah's mercy prevailed over his wrath and the people were spared.
The Quran specifically mentioned that they were a unique tribe who believed after being hostile to their prophet (Qur'an 10:98).

"...Verily my mercy prevails over my wrath." (Sahih Buhari 3022)

"...And Allah will not punish them while they seek forgiveness." (Quran 8:33)
And what about Prophet Yunus? He realized his mistake when a violent storm meant he had to be thrown into the Sea to appease the gods (a pagan tradition) to keep the Ship stable.

He agreed to cast lots and his name appeared thrice in a row and he knew that it is from Allah.
Though his companions knew he was a righteous person, he accepted his fate and was thrown into the Sea.

Soon after he found himself under three layers of darkness.

The darkness of the Whale's stomach.
The darkness of the bottom of the Sea.
The darkness of the night.
Once he realized he was still alive inside the Whale's stomach he started glorifying Allah and that led to his salvation.

He kept repeating "Laa ilaaha illa anta subhaanaka inee kuntu min Thaalimeen"

Again, Allah's mercy prevailed, he was saved and reunited with his people.
