Anyway if you’re doing therapy with brothers struggling with their relationships with BW, pls engage the cultural competency required to “go there” and draw this trauma out
Get them to talk about it
Most need a safe space to even say “My mama wasn’t perfect”

Cuz the last thing we allow is for Black men to openly say anything negative about their mothers. We condemn them to Hades for anything less than adoration and praise and it’s a sickness
We wonder why so many have such bottled up hatred and rage that dumps on BW tho

And even if their mama wasn’t abusive or projecting her own trauma onto them, some may still struggle with latent resentment especially if they have darker skin and/or have experienced overt racism and bias.

But a lot of times mama wasn’t perfect. Mama was harmful. Mama was neglectful. Mama was emotionally vacant or absent. Mama wasn’t equipped to love her human boy child in ways that could help him feel whole. And that’s real.

I’ve counseled and dated enough to know

And being conscious of the ways in which men have harmed me throughout my life and knowing how such harm has historically and generationally disrupted Black mother-son relationships, Ive been laser-focused on how I care for and love my son.

I can’t let my son grow up to become just like the men who harmed me

He will know love. He will know support. He will know hugs and kisses and affirmations. He won’t know beatings or cuss outs. He will know soft language and tender touches. He won’t be forced into things.
