Hot take: filmmakers of color, working class + LGBT should not have to exclusively tell stories of their experiences to address diversity and representation in the industry. Just by virtue of commissioning us (on the strength of a good story) is in itself being dvrse + an ally
Our stories are important and SHOULD be told but I am/we are NOT just our heritage, class or sexual orientation. We do genre too! The UK industry has good intentions but unconcious bias training should be on every Gate Keepers to-do list to address this issue in a meaningful way.
It's not the most pressing issue in our world today but it's something commissioners and development can think about for when we do return to a new normal. A better normal. X
