I thought the Hurts pick was a good pick. For a few reasons.

1. Carson’s backup has proven to be a PREMIER position of necessity. You can’t lose another season simply because your QB got injured again. 3 seasons in a row where your QB isn’t playing a playoff game is tough.
2. The NFL is going to 17 games, and if you don’t have the 1 seed, you’re playing in the wildcard round. That’s more opportunities for injury. Backup QB who you can win with becomes even more important to have.
3. Let’s say Hurts never plays, but tears it up in preseason. Let’s say a team is desperate. Or let’s say Carson misses 4 games and hurts comes in and balls...you can turn one asset into multiple assets by trading him. Eagles will need more picks going forward.
4. I know, a second round pick is important. However, in last years playoff game against Seattle, I’d rather have Jalen Hurts at QB than Sidney Jones or JJAW. The QB position is still the most important in sports by a mile.
5. Lastly, here’s the sobering reality. Torn ACL, fractured back, major concussion.

These are three MAJOR injuries. It’s hard to imagine Carson having a Tom Brady type career. It’s not THAT hard to imagine him walking away earlier rather than later, a lot like Andrew Luck.
If the Eagles believe they need to do what’s in the best interest of their franchise’s future, by having a replacement ready should the worse case scenario happen to the most important position, then it’s worth the second round pick.
