For the past 2 weeks I've been working as a #pharmacist in Cross Lake (Pimicikimak) First Nation in northern MB. Leadership took early action to restrict all non-essential travel and there have therefore been no cases of #COVID19 here. 1/x
Despite no cases the effects to the community are huge. Non-essential visits mean less access to goods and services in Thompson (3hrs drive). #SocialDistancing means long lines outside NorthMart daily. 2/x
Working in the #pharmacy, I've felt safe due to protective measures + lack of cases. Mood here is positive overall but w tension about how long access to the outside will be blocked. Some loosening is now taking place although checkpoints in/out of the community still exist
Repeated hits of snow and colder temperatures have prolonged winter. While the rest of the country enjoyed double digit temperatures, we were still getting more snow. Being on the transition season means water is not safe to cross but summer activities arent here yet 4/x
Finally yesterday spring seems to have arrived. Snow is melting fast, although it is still waist deep in most of my yard. Nevertheless, I got a mild sunburn yesterday reading on the deck. (Oops - need that SPF!) Nicer temps will help everyone feel less stir crazy. 6/x
The community is beautiful and the people are welcoming, friendly and kind. It takes time as a new #pharmacist to win trust but I'm enjoying conversing with people and consulting on their prescriptions, recommending OTCs and prescribing for #TobaccoCessation and other conditions
The #pharmacy team here is awesome. Fast, efficient, hard working - but also outgoing, welcoming, hilarious. The shifts go by fast with lots of laughs. And the pharmacy manager Ofelia is outstanding - she's won NWC #pharmacist of the year before for a reason.
I'm looking forward to when COVID19 restrictions start to loosen and I can participate in social activities and get to know ppl (and be known by ppl) better. It's tough being new in a community and being confined to work + home.
I'm working relief here bc staff #pharmacist position is vacant. This is an amazing opportunity esp for a new grad who wants to practice at top of scope, make a difference, start their career on a strong financial footing. Reach out to me if you want to know more.
