honestly, the cultural sector is a mess. this pandemic will be a tragic reset button for us, and i hope it is used to rebuild the sector in a more meaningful way that reimagines the purpose of theatre and the process of creativity - that centres the creativity of our everyday.
companies like SlungLow really are the future of our sector. we need to be adaptable, we need to understand how to be kind and useful, we need to be honest with ourselves and everyone around us.
reimagining the purpose of theatre would help us think more broadly about what it means to be useful. a theatre doesn't stop being a theatre because it has repurposed itself as a foodbank. if the only way we can 'serve' communities is via shows, i don't know how useful we are.
the slogan of British theatre is it does enough because it "changes lives" - no question of whose lives & why. the idea of it is enough. when that idea becomes self-serving, it's very easy for all of that to be taken away and the rut of the sector to be exposed outside the norm.
