Lesser known fact about Amanullah Khan!

He went to perform Hajj two times in his lifetime. None of this was during his rule or before but after he was in exile in Europe - once in March 1931, and then in April, 1935.

He was seen crying uncontrollably on both of these occasions!
He is still referred to as 'Ghazi' Amanullah Khan for he took part in the Jehad that he declared against the British.

The title Ghazi is used for those who participate in Jehad and return alive others are termed 'Shaheed' (martyr). Both titles have basis in religion.
Ironically, the one major reason he was forced out of Afghanistan and his rule was his reforms that most of the Afghans at the time believed were Un-Islamic. So they rose in revolt and force him out of the country.
In exile, his faith remained a topic of discussion, and concern among many. The controversy around his faith would not leave him in peace.

There was a popular media story of his and his wife's conversion to Christianity, also published by NYT.

It took about 6 months for NYT to publish a denial of their previous story re his conversion.

[Why does a denial (confession of being) mostly gets less space than original false story in the media?]

Amanullah Khan going for Hajj two times was his way of public demonstration of his faith. There is no reason to question his religious motivation either. But Hajj afforded him the only opportunity to meet - or to be seen by many Afghans while engaging in religious activities.
Yesterday was his 60th death anniversary. He still remains a controversial figure among the Afghan population.
Re-read every sentence before you respond to the thread. I can't help if you can't read or intentionally mis-read here.

Better you go through all of the stuff that I wrote about Amanullah Khan on Twitter.

I have skipped many details like whom Amanullah met while on Hajj, how was he treated by Sauds, what did the Afghan delegation (of Nadir Shah) did, who (allegedly) paid for his Hajj, who was in his retinue etc. If I do then I shall write a paper if not a book on his Hajjs.
