I’m on twitter in a personal capacity but most people following me are doing so because of my professional roles incl that of @IHCA_IE VP

There are many good reasons for not discussing IR issues on SoMe but we have gotten to the point where some people think it’s okay to (1)
(2) malign & undermine some of my colleagues, those in FTPP

People like @OisinO_Connell who are the forefront of their field & are active in the covid-19 response in everything from directly providing acute medical care to patients with covid & non covid illnesses to leading
(3) on resterilization collaborations to ensure adequate PPE to fostering collaborations on sourcing PPE from new sources

Thank you Oisin for all you have done & are doing
(4) people like @coscardio who have multiple subspecialty cardiology fellowships who just want to play their part assisting with the covid-19 response & who very reasonably want to be able to providing ongoing care for the patients they are already looking after

As they have a
(5) very clear responsibility to do so as listed by @MedCouncilIRL

People like @RonanTKavanagh who have a lifetime of providing subspecialty rheumatology services in the West of Ireland which has one of the worst ratios for subspecialty rheumatology Consultants in the public
(6) sector

Again I am limited by what I can say on SoMe

But what I have seen consistently by my FTPP colleagues in the @IHCA_IE is that they have been flexible, committed & urgent in their intention to sort this out
(7) but guess what?

The same people who breached the 2008 contract for 10 years

Who continue to discriminate against post 2012 Consultants like myself

Treat them with the same level of disdain they do those of us in the public service
(8) I absolutely despair of how we are ever going to have a health service fit for purpose

Where all patients are seen for everything within 6 weeks

As long as we have a situation where consultants are treated as the enemy by those making policy decisions
(9) we have the longest waiting lists in Europe

The impact of lockdown on those lists is apocalyptic

We have the lowest Consultant numbers in Europe

To meet need for all patients, all of whom deserve high quality care & timely access
(10) we need everyone working together

Collaborating for all patients to meet need

It is bizarre that a blank cheque has been written for the private hospitals but FTPP consultants are expected to run rooms at a massive loss

A type C contract would have sorted this
(11) it would have enabled us to make maximal use of the private capacity that we are paying through the nose for

But as is increasingly obvious

Ideology & entrenchment is favored over pragmatism that would be better for patient care
(12) and yes I think it’s appalling that at a time when Consultants are risking our own lives to provide patient care that some think it’s fine to call us absolutely “awful” & it’s worse that those in leadership in this country didn’t come out in our defence

They use & abuse us
(13) we expect no better based on past experience

And when you look at the Consultant recruitment & retention crisis this toxic behaviour is a significant barrier to attracting & retaining staff

It is somewhat ironic to note that it’s a reason for some why they are in the
(14) private sector

So there you have it

I stand with my colleagues who have been badly maligned at a time when they have been more than eager to play their part in the national response

The messing that has gone on has impacted our ability to us the private sector capacity
(15) to the full benefit of all our patients

I am furious & disappointed about that

Our Secretary General Martin Varley has hardly had a wink of sleep this past 6 weeks trying to keep all our members safe quietly working in background addressing PPE issues & diligently trying
(16) to get this contract sorted so all patients get the full benefit of the additional capacity which is so badly needed for urgent care

It’s time for those delaying & procrastinating to step up & get this done so we get the benefit of the access we have paid for
(17) otherwise get set for the PAC to dine out on this for months

It’s a disgrace with the urgent care that could be extensively provided & it’s a credit to the FTPP consultants that so much acute care has been provided pro bono & in good faith while this has played out
(18) time to get this done & time for an end to the smear campaign against the FTPP consultants
