Happy #LesbianDayofVisibility ! Lesbians should be visible everywhere as a bit more than just gals being pals - including museums' collections! So #LabelYourLesbians in artworks and objects! I'll start, anyone who wants to join in please do and I'll link to others doing the same!
Gustave Courbet, The Sleepers, 1866, at @PetitPalais_ What that right hand is stroking, definitely intentionally, reminds me of the famous page 28 in @Portrait_Movie
Simon Solomon, Sappho and Erinna in the Garden at Miytilene on the island of Lesbos (1864) at @Tate . Yes, Sappho gave us "sapphic", "lesbian" and this iconic line from one of her poems: "Sweet mother, I cannot weave – slender Aphrodite has overcome me with longing for a girl."
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, The Bed (1893), @MuseeOrsay . Toulouse-Lautrec's depictions of sex workers' lives in Parisian brothels included moments that, rather than sexualising them, caught intimate glimpses of their personal lives, both by themselves and with each other.
François Boucher, The Nymph Callisto, seducd by Jupiter as Diana (1759), Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. Or: weirdest lesbian art history loophole to justify depicting two gals cuddling up: "oh this is Jupiter shapeshifting as Diana, so it's all good! No homo right?"
[NSFWFH] Also hey, when you're both horny AND a homophobe, the result is this: Auguste Rodin, Damned Women (c.1885) at @brooklynmuseum based on Baudelaire's Fleurs du Mal poem with the same name. Wow yeah...Hell sounds terrible. Wow. Much damned. Very sin.
[More NSFWFH] Another crowd favourite: Nicolas François Octave Tassaert , The Damned Woman (1859), private collection. She'll be fiiine.
Anna Klumpke, Portrait of Rosa Bonheur (1898), oil on canvas, @metmuseum . In a lesbian art history full of men portraying lesbians in a very male gazey way - let's appreciate this beautiful portrait of Rosa Bonheur by her partner!
In same spirit, Gerda Wegnerer, On the Road to Anacapri (1922) depicting Gerda and her wife Lili Elbe! Lili appeared in many of Gerda's portraits. She was a trans woman and it is believed modelling sessions with Gerda led Lili to explore and finally embrace her gender identity🏳️‍⚧️
