Every year Muslims all over the world observe fasting (Ramadan) and during this period they refrain from eating, drinking, sexual relationships, smoking, alcohol consumption and indulging in inappropriate thoughts and behaviour. They do this from sunrise to sunset for 1 month.
Fasting is one of the pillars of Islam and is obligatory to all healthy male and females except the acutely and chronically ill, elderly, menstruating females, pregnant, breastfeeding mothers, and people who are travelling for long distances.
I am not going to focus on the religious aspects of fasting, but rather take a scientific look at how fasting is effective to anyone regardless of their religion or beliefs. I am going to touch some points very briefly.
Fasting is the reset button to our system. It’s a brilliant method to program and rewire the human mind. When practised right It becomes the ultimate tool for self-discipline, self-control and self-mastery.
What fasting does is it gives you control over your desires (Eating/Drinking/sexual relationships). You realize that you could choose your thoughts and actions. The aspect of spirituality also adds to the detoxification processes. IMO fasting is a practical form of meditation.
Patients who suffer from diabetes are advised not to fast due to the observed decrease in blood glucose levels. What fasting then archives In a healthy person is good blood glucose and cholesterol control as well. This helps in the fight against weight gain and risk of diabetes.
Intermittent fasting is an efficient strategy to lose weight. Patients are told to fast for 16h and have only two meals a day. I personally advocate for intermittent fasting and have seen very good results of weight loss. Ramadan fasting is basically intermittent fasting as well!
Muslims are obligated for more charity at this time. They would donate money and food to poor people. This in a way helps poor people and bridges gaps between the societies as well. You could also understand the plight and sufferings of poor people at this time too.
In summary, fasting is a logical method to program the mind and give rise to self-discipline. When done right, the practice is carried throughout and into all aspects of your life as well. Fasting also teaches patience and brings clarity to the mind.
