ok if you don’t fully understand why south asians are so hurt by ‘small gestures’ and ‘fashion choices’, please read this.
disclaimer: every minority experiences racism, (but this thread is for south asians specifically) so please don’t discredit anyone’s experience, thank you
disclaimer2: i was fortunate enough to grow up in an area with only subtle racism, i haven’t experienced intense discrimination but other have. so this thread is not as intense as it could have been.
skin: you would be made fun of because you have darker skin, ‘did you burn?’ ‘why does your skin look like shit’, ‘are you dirty?’ and now famous celebrities tan their skin and get praised for something a lot of us were bullied for
food: i used to bring chappati to school when i was 8, these 12 years old made fun of it and mocked the smell. this made me never bring indian food to school again, i still don’t and i’m 15 with a group of asian friends who i know won’t mock me but you never really forget...
... people now eat indian takeout regularly, when asked what food they like they will ‘indian’, but they are most likely the same people who mocked it years ago
clothes: south asian culture has beautiful clothes, but there was a point where you would scared to out in these clothes because you knew people would stare at you weirdly instead of appreciating them. kim kardashian blatantly appropriated their without caring about her actions
i’m not muslim but i know they experience so much hate for no reason, i can’t speak on their behalf because i haven’t been through what they have. but just keep in mind they get hated against regularly
dances: indian dance are extremely hard, they make your entire body ache for ages and they also hold cultural/religious value, so when people make fun of stereotypical dance steps, it’s offensive
tiktok challenges and shit are like ‘asian check’ but you know they only mean oriental. people seem to forget south asia exists. it doesn’t help that all our struggles are erased for history
all these and many many other things brought down self esteem, i didn’t post pictures of myself unless they were whitewashed by the sun (it’s hard to explain but morning sun makes ur skin whiter), i still hate a lot of my asian features such as my nose
now kpop, idk about y’all but kpop really helped my social skills and it helped me appreciate my culture more. so when idols i look up mock my culture, it hurts. yes they can educated and that’s what we want but what hurts ever more is the thousand of fans they have are...
invalidating our feelings. we did not go through years or racism to not recognise our dances and movement being mocked. were tuned it to all that, we can see when people are making fun of us and it’s hurts when it’s people you like.
we don’t want to cancel anyone, we want to educate people so younger generations of south asians don’t have to face the amount of racism
